There’s something absolutely wonderful about the kind of make your own culture furthered by the likes of Creative Beads and Jewellery magazine, and it’s something we deeply appreciate here at Newsstand – an antidote to the consumer culture that we live within.
You may doubt what we say (and sure, you need to buy the beads, we’ll give you that one), but there’s something ever so satisfying about creating something yourself with your own hands. After all, you don’t truly appreciate something bought at the store – you can’t know how many hours of hard work went into building you TV, and it probably was mostly done by robots. But, when you’ve poured a few hours of your life into fashioning something with love and care, that’s when you know the true worth of something. Obviously this can’t be applied across the whole of society. We tried making a television once and the results were frankly hilarious; turns out wood doesn’t get much reception at all. Nevertheless, hobbies and crafts where you create something are a welcome relief from a world where we know the cost of everything but the value of nothing. Profound, right? NB
