More on British Patchwork & Quilting Magazine

When my older sister announced that she was going to make a patchwork quilt, I was dubious. My sister’s previous attempts at sewing genius had gone far from swimmingly, but, despite the evidence of a rather odd looking prom dress from four years prior, she was determined. Surprisingly enough, it turned out perfectly. Bright and warm, she’d used swatches of discarded material from all over our house (and other’s houses I hasten to add) to create an enormous and gorgeous masterpiece.

Patchwork quilts are hardly items subject to fashion or trend, but if they were, I would say they were making a huge comeback under the titles of ‘shabby chic’ and ‘kitsh’. Anybody a fan of Cath Kidson? She has brought our favourite floral, polka dotted and quaint home ware items back into our kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms. But quilting has been around ever since our fine species decided to wear clothes. Raggedy clothing would be stitched and restitched with spare corners of material to prolong its life, and this technique has been discovered as far back as the Ancient Egyptians, and even cavemen would sew together animal skins to make garments!

Personally I love the bright designs of modern patch working and I remember vividly two made by my great aunt, constructed out of tiny hexagonal pieces of paisley print material that still adorn the beds in my Grandmother’s house to this day. I think they make a timelessly stylish addition to any bed or sofa, provided that they have colours and prints that complement both each other and the surrounding room.
