Popular Patchwork magazine is filled with interesting and innovative ways to approach this most friendly and gentle of hobbies. Whether it be an interesting patch-work take on the Large Hadron Collider currently flinging subatomic particles in a very big circle under France and Switzerland – really, someone has actually made this and it looks excellent – or re-using old denim jeans to make a blue but beautiful design, this mag has got you covered on things new and different.
We would like, however, to talk about something old and boring. History. One of the best applications we have ever heard of for patch-work and quilting comes rather surprisingly from the Simpsons. Perhaps this is a tad unexpected, but nevertheless it is fascinating; the women of the family have been making a quilt for several hundred years, each adding their own square. Doing this would result in a real, physical record of the history of your family, and not something simply written down in dusty books, but something alive that can be added to in each generation. Quilting as history seems to simply be a fantastic idea for a family project, and who knows, you might even be able to get the boys of the family to contribute something, under the careful editorial gaze of you of course. NB
Popular Patchwork Magazine is in the Quilting category and is just one of over 3,000 magazines now available at Newsstand, to browse recent front covers of Popular Patchwork Magazine, please click here.
