Believe it or not (and I certainly didn’t at first), there is a underground society of guerrilla knitters, who head out under cover of night and knit. They do not, however, knit as you or I might – making a comfy sweater for one of the grandkids for example. No, they attempt audacious acts of knitting never seen before, such as completely covering a tree with knitwork, or a lamp-post or similar thing. And you know what? This is great. The resulting effect is a more cheerful world, with brightly coloured coverings, far superior to the rather drab and dull efforts of most graffiti artists. We commend these people for their brave acts (is it a crime to knit where no knitting is required?), and encourage more of the like.
Somehow guerrilla knitting has a very peculiarly English air – sort of like extreme tea-drinking – and we like this sort of thing. It might go on and we simply haven’t heard of it, but the number one surreptitious super-english activity we would like to see is a spot of guerrilla gardening. Imagine; you walk down the same boring street you do every day after work to get home. The next morning however it is filled with geraniums and roses and flowers of all descriptions. There’s a small pond surrounded by a few trees casting a gentle bit of shade where the dilapidated bench used to be, with only a carelessly left behind pipe (still warm, they must have just left!) the evidence of the guerrilla gardeners. Fantastic. So grab your knitting needles or your spade and seeds, and head out there and make the world a more colourful place. NB
