Brought to you from the desk of world-renowned cross-stitcher Mary Hickmott,
New Stitches is one of the best cross-stitch magazines (of which there are more than a few!) out there.
New Stitches, although a rather slim number, is packed with great designs aimed at every level of expertise from beginner to highly advanced. There are great ideas for putting your cross-stitch to use, such as in cards or cushions, and it is all written in a helpful friendly manner. The selling point of this mag however is the expertise of Mary Hickmott, pattern designer and cross-stitch extraordinaire, and with her helpful advice and guidance you can learn both simple and advanced needlework techniques.

We do like a good bit of cross-stitch here at Newsstand, and judging by the number of cross-stitch magazines out there you rather like it too! There’s something wonderfully antiquated about the hobby – it is something you can imagine doing in the late 18th century, by a roaring fire burning in the hearth whilst your daughter or grand-daughter does her best to learn the piano. It speaks to us of an old England, where things took time, and didn’t need to be rushed. Where craftsmanship, dedication that takes hours to make a single piece of work, is appreciated and valued.
Cross-stitch also seems the most genteel of hobbies – you won’t find a single negative word in a magazine such as New Stitches, no sir. Everything is welcoming, brightly coloured and above all warm feeling. It is all about construction, making something new using skills of old, and there is no space and no need for any negativity. Sadly many of us are rather ham-fisted and un-crafty here at Newsstand, so our liking of cross-stitch stays limited to appreciation from the sidelines, but if there is a friendlier, happier hobby than this then we have yet to find it. NB
New Stitches Magazine is in the Knitting and Crochet category and is just one of over 3,000 magazines now available at Newsstand, to browse recent front covers of New Stitches Magazine, please click here.
