Stereotypical Japanese street fashion has always bit a subject of awe to the Western world… Hello Kitty ring any bells?
There are many who adorn themselves in bright colours, anime contact lenses and knee high socks, whilst back combing and dying their hair all shades of the rainbow. It’s big and it’s brave… a little mental, but who are we to judge? It all began in the 19th Century when the Japanese started to copy Western fashions, but by the 21st Century it has transformed down a tangent of it’s own and is widely known as street fashion. Although this is a hugely wide category, it is easy to spot and is mostly influenced by Korea, Chine and Taiwan. The strong youth culture in Japan drives them to try out new and exciting looks, often avoiding the traditions of their ancestry and making use of an often disposable income. One of the key fashion group is entitled the ‘lolita’ of which there are many different strains, including the goth, the fairy, the kodona, sweet, punk, princess, shiro & kiro , sailor, Wa and many more.
The term Lolita routes back their Japan’s Portuguese routes and they perceived it to mean something ‘cute’, so adopted it to describe their fashion.
