‘Alternative’ lifestyle concepts, such as fortune telling, clairvoyance, the innate magical properties of crystals and the like have been of great fascination to us in Britain for a good many years. The staple part of many an old fashioned travelling fair was a mysterious, dark tent in which a wizened old woman would, in exchange for a small sum of money, perform whatever spiritual service you required, from contacting the dead to telling the future. This sense of ‘otherness’, of being connected to a different plane of existence has been valued (and quite lucratively at that) since time immemorial.
Perhaps the strangest psychic related tale, however, comes from a much more recent time than the medieval. During the Second World War, many people tragically lost their lives, and there were many grieving relations left at home. One psychic in London offered people the chance to gain a little bit of closure through her spiritual talents, bringing information about loved ones whereabouts and statuses. The only problem was that she was too good; she seemed to know about classified operations that the public weren’t aware of, and as a result was suspected of being a spy. There was no evidence, but the government was so suspicious that she became the last person to be arrested in Britain under the antiquated Fraudulent Mediums Act. So, spy or spiritualist? We’ll let you decide. NB
