In terms of jewellery, I prefer classic and simple pieces because they tend to go with more looks than enormous and brightly coloured jewellery. This is, however, just a personal preference. Florals and insects are extremely popular in jewellery trends, perhaps because they can afford extremely intricate designs and look great as statement jewellery. You can create all these things with Bead Style magazine, or one of the many other crafts magazines here at Newsstand.
Popular designer Jennifer Herwitt has made a name for herself among celebrities with her ornate insect designs in both white and yellow gold. The thin chains and spindly legs of her ‘living jewels’ accentuate the neck, wrist and fingers, making them look more slender than bulky statement jewellery. It is also extremely important to find out which shades suit you, for example, people with warm skin tones should opt for yellow gold, whereas this might wash out someone with very pale skin.
Remember that jewellery is meant to accentuate a look rather than define it, so don’t pile on the jewels, it might ruin your outfit! When going out I tend to wear a pair of statement drop down earrings if my hair is up, or some simple studs if my hair is down, but always with a bit of sparkle. I’ve had far too many experiences, as I’m sure many have, of that tragic moment when your hair gets stuck in your drop down earrings and you have to frantically struggle to free yourself. Now that is never a good look!
